Henrik at ‘Eclectic Grounds’ published a post today Immigrant Violence: Not ethnicity but social class is the issue quoting a German politician who claims that Germany has too many ‘criminal young foreigners’ and that ‘foreigners who don’t stick to our rules don’t belong here’. The predominant finding of a study from the German Youth Institute was, however, that most perpetrators have a low level of education and come from low-income families, and not from any particular racial group.

In Australia non-white immigrants are also unjustly labelled as more criminal than ‘us’, whereas the people who should know, such as Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Christine Nixon, say that Sudanese are no more involved in crime than any other community.

Expert voices like Nixon’s are, however, neutered by media beat-ups. Channel Ten, A Current Affair and Today Tonight, claimed that group of trouble-causing youths in Noble Park were Sudanese, while the footage that they aired showed clearly that there was only one Sudanese person in a large non-Sudanese group. Today Tonight claimed that residents of were cowering in their houses in fear of Sudanese ‘gangs’, while follow-up interviews refuted this too The Voice of Today’s Apathetic Youth.
