Migrants. Refugees. All desperate. Many dead

People desperate for a new life are drowning in many hundreds every year, particularly off the coast of Libya. The most recent incident, when a boat capsized last Friday, has resulted in at least 200 deaths.

Immigration Change org. has an article about the terrible loss of life across the world, at sea and in the desert between Mexico and the US.

I was so moved by the photos they published that I have reproduced them here:

The end of a journey of desperation

Border Angels, a US organisation, has 3,000 members, all volunteers, who place food and water at desert waystations to try to save lives in the searing heat.

Immigration Change offers these solutions:

  • Adjust labor supply to demand
  • Allow people the same freedom of movement as goods, services, and capital.

We should stop building walls between people and instead look for ways to build bridges.
