Do ‘countries of first asylum’ actually offer it?

The Refugee Council of Australia released a report on Monday on the asylum-seeking process in Asia and the Middle East The Search for Protection

The report found that in some countries of supposed first asylum found genuine refugees are still treated as illegal immigrants.

The report also found that few asylum seekers knew anything about visa policies in the countries they were fleeing to.

Australia chief executive Paul Power said:

“Most of them, if not all of them, had official registration with the United Nations and yet in a number of the countries where people were seeking refuge they were treated as illegal immigrants.”
