Australian government takes pity on young lovers

Breaking news: foreigners whose temporary visas have expired and who are in a relationship with an Australian citizen or resident will be apply for a visa to stay with their partners without having to leave the country.

This is, I know, a minority migration issue – and hardly concerns what I regard as ‘marginalised migrants’, but is an issue close to me – my daughter recently married a US citizen, and while they are in the throes of applying for spouse visas in their respective countries, they have been faced with separation, or enforced international travel every three months, when their tourist visas expire.

My daughter’s new husband will now be able to stay in Australia while DIAC processes his spouse visa application.

The Age quotes Refugee and Immigration Legal Centre co-ordinator David Manne who said the old regulation sometimes had ”absurd” outcomes, forcing the separation of Australians from their loved ones.

”It is undoubtedly the case that section 48 has operated very harshly and unjustly in some cases in the past and has caused quite needless harm to people including loved ones who are Australians,” he said. More foreigners can stay while applying for visa
