Ruddock soft on illegal immigrants

There’s always an easy story when Ruddock speaks about asylum seekers and refugees.

Yesterday I pointed out the gross discrepancies in the numbers of refugees that Ruddock quoted – easy to see, even for the maths-challenged, like me. Lies, damned lies, and Ruddock on asylum seekers

Ruddock, as does Sharman Stone, crow that they ‘stopped the boats’, conveniently ignoring the massive drop in numbers of asylum seekers worldwide that occurred between 2003 and 2006.

Also ignoring the fact that Ruddock’s ministry presided over a 33% increase in illegal immigrants!

Crikey tells us that when Ruddock first held the Immigration portfolio in 1996, there were 45,000 people in Australia unlawfully in 1996. In 1997: 51,000. Rudd, Ruddock and the deep, dark currents of fear

In 2000, they’d climbed to nearly 59,000. Numbers peaked at 59,800 in the last months of Ruddock’s time as minister.

Ruddock: a gift to a blogger so busy that she really shouldn’t be blogging at all!
